Chelsea executives told January signing incredible news about Antonio Conte | Football | Sport
Conte is hanging on to his job at Stamford Bridge by the skin of his teeth after a run of one win in five games.
According to The Times, Chelsea already believes the Italian’s departure is set in stone.
It is claimed the unnamed new arrival was informed during transfer negotiations with Chelsea executives that Conte would definitely be gone by the summer.
A senior Chelsea chief even told the player that Conte could be axed before the end of the season.
The revelations did not put him off signing on the dotted line.
Chelsea signed three players in the January transfer window.
Midfielder Ross Barkley, who was close to joining last summer, was lured from Everton for £15million.
Left-back Emerson Palmieri put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract on the penultimate day of the window for an initial £17.6m fee.
While striker Olivier Giroud swapped Arsenal for Chelsea on transfer deadline day, signing an 18-month contract.
Monday night’s 4-1 defeat at Watford ramped up speculation over Conte’s future but he insists he will see out the final year of his deal, which expires in 2019.
“I am not thinking for only one moment the possibility of going away from this club,” he said.
“My commitment and the players are totally for this club.
“A lot of time in football the manager and the coach depends on the result.
“At the moment we are having a poor result. For this reason we have to pay great attention.”
It was reported in the week that Chelsea could axe Conte after the Watford loss but he will be in charge against West Brom on Monday (8pm).
Conte said: “We have to try to stop this bad run and get three points against West Brom.
“It won’t be easy, the confidence is not high but we have to trust in our work and football.
“I think we can talk about two different games. Two bad results but against Bournemouth we created chances but weren’t too clinical. We conceded three shots and three goals.
“But against Watford it was different.
“The performance was negative from the start, conceded three goals in eight minutes. I think the coach has to understand and find the best solution to avoid this type of situation. I didn’t like the Watford performance.”
