Roger Federer has been sent THIS text message from Rafael Nadal | Tennis | Sport
Federer, 36, downed Marin Cilic in five sets to win the Australian Open last month to close the gap on Nadal at the top of the rankings.
The Swiss great broke down in tears as he lifted the trophy and Nadal was quick to pass on his best wishes.
Nadal said: “I immediately sent him a text message (after the Australian Open final).
“I usually congratulate people I know in private rather than publicly. I’ve had a very good relationship with Federer for years now.
“I was happy for him; I congratulated him and I told him I’m always happy when he does well.”
Federer has now won four more Grand Slams than Nadal but the Spaniard insists he’s not keeping count.
He added: “I’m always looking at what’s in front of me, not what’s around me.
“There’s always someone who has achieved more than you or who has earned more than you. You can’t let that frustrate you; instead, it’s better to be satisfied with what you do, so long as you’re giving it your all.”
Nadal this week announced he has signed up for The Queen’s Club Championships this summer.
The world No 1 has pulled out of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament the last two years. He suffered a wrist injury in 2016 and then wanted more rest after his French Open win in 2017.
Nadal said: ‘I am very excited to come to Queen’s in 2018. It is going to be the tenth anniversary of my victory in 2008, it’s a great memory, winning there and three weeks later winning Wimbledon.
“It was an unforgettable year. I am very excited to be coming back and playing Queen’s again.”
